I was so excited about England’s first match of the Women’s World Cup that I trotted off to my local. Last summer, it had been a regular haunt, thanks to the men’s World Cup, which filled the beer garden for almost every match, whether England were playing or not. Support has grown as the games have progressed and England made their way to a semi-final once again. I’m a relative newcomer to enjoying sport, and certainly football, but the women’s game feels welcoming to someone like me. Phil Neville has called Lucy Bronze “the best player in the world”.
